Little research of the natural methods used to cure fever

Curated by Ferdinando Donolato

Fever is usually a defense of the body against microbes and viruses. When the organism is invaded by these microbes or viruses, a rise in temperature is created. The increase in heat is used to create a situation where viruses or microbes no longer find the conditions to multiply and live: the body therefore has the possibility of eliminating them.
From this premise we understand that it is not good to "stop" a fever, if anything it must be managed, for this reason we have researched what naturopaths recommend, and the literature on the subject and we present it to you, everyone will then do what they deem appropriate.
It should be borne in mind that too high a temperature can be dangerous, beyond 42 ° irreversible lesions to brain cells can occur. In young children, in the first 9 months of life, a temperature of over: 39 ° can be very dangerous: in these cases the temperature must be lowered!
The fever we treat in this research is the classic flu, without pathologies such as: tuberculosis, pleurisy, pneumonia, and other pathologies.
We also quote a phrase from our grandmothers: "el xe cresuo parchè el gà fato ea febre" "grew up because he had a fever". An old and serious finding, fever makes the baby grow, strengthens his immune system and stimulates him to prepare and improve his defensive systems against infections. Not only does a good fever strengthen the child's "I", it takes greater possession of his body and thus finds its rightful place in this world.

Fever - General definition, hypetermia

Fever = increase in body temperature due to alteration of the body's thermal regulation mechanisms and, in particular, to the dissociation between heat production and its dispersion.

Febbricola = slight increase in body temperature; which is between 37 and 37,5 ° C, characteristic of many morbid conditions, often without apparent cause (such as the initial stages of tuberculosis, pleurisy, hyperthyroidism, some infectious diseases, etc.), this fever must persist , to find these pathologies.

The average body temperature is 37 degrees centigrade (36,9) but it can be said that each person has his own temperature, it can be between 36,5 and 37,5 °, in this case it is not included in the pathology.

Febbricola = between 37,5 and 38 °
Light fever = between 38 ° and 38,5 °
Moderate = between 38,5 ° and 39 °
Strong = between 39 and 40 °
Hypertemia = over 40 °

The increase in temperature does not exclusively go hand in hand with the severity of the case, especially in children, who may have a high fever after a nervous breakdown and may not have a fever with typhus. Fever usually has a low point on awakening and a high point around 17:00 - 18:00 (remember the solar time).

A good rule of thumb for measuring fever is not to put the thermometer under the armpit, as sweating easily distorts the results from 1/2 to 1 ° less.
To have the safest results you must take the temperature rectally, if possible, (hemorrhoids are a contraindication) otherwise in the mouth considering that there is a difference of + 1 °.
The new models of digital thermometers are currently on the market for which instructions must be followed.
It must be kept in mind that too high a temperature can be dangerous, beyond 42 ° irreversible lesions to brain cells can occur.
Fever itself represents a danger to most individuals only above 41,5 ° C.
Only for (approximately) 4 out of 100 children between six months and six years of age, a moderate fever (around 39 ° C) can constitute a risk of seizures.
These are almost always benign forms, which resolve themselves without consequences, but tend to repeat themselves in about half of the cases.
In all other cases (approximately 96 out of 100 children) it is not necessary or appropriate to intervene immediately with antipyretic drugs during fever, and this also applies to all children over 6 years.

How to behave in case of fever

First ascertained that it is only a flu phase, we start by venting the "internal heat" which generates the increase in "temperature". A fever becomes dangerous when it does not have a chance to vent. If we turn on a boiler, we create heat; but if this boiler does not have a flue and all the heat remains inside it will certainly damage the boiler structure.

If, on the other hand, the boiler has a good flue, that is a vent, we can make a lot of fire, therefore heat, but we will not have structural damage. So it is also for our organism, we must bring the excess heat we have inside out and make it dissipate. This way we avoid having damage. The damages of a fever occur in the brain and are therefore usually very serious damages, damaging the integrity of the person. So it becomes important to take the heat away from the head or brain area. The head temperature must always be under control. Fever is faced considering the age of the patient. It is difficult for a small child to get herbal teas or other things easily, so many medications should be passed on from the mother through breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is in itself a valuable aid for the baby.

The fever was treated with natural therapies in different ways according to the time and the area. Many empirical treatments have proven to be excellent remedies, while others have added problems to the problems.
It is set out below, how common sense people behaved in case of fever.

What to do always

Give a lot of drink and humidify the environment.
Many liquids such as: extracts or centrifuges of apples (many) and carrots (few), or grated apples, smoothies, soups, water and honey, honey and lemon water, water and lemon. It is important to drink during this period.
Only if there is an appetite, adopt a diet based on simple and digestible foods such as fruit, vegetable soups, rice or juices.
Make cold frictions all over the body (between meals) with subsequent bed rest, to promote the vasomotor reaction of the skin, then wrapped in blankets several times a day.
Keep your feet warm (with hot water bags or massages).
Intestinal cleansing is very useful.
All this normally prevents, even in 4% of children at risk, febrile seizures.

Clean bowel

The first thing to do in case of a fever is to clean the intestines. This ancient and very valid practice was adopted until a few years ago by the "medical doctors". Who does not remember in case of fever the famous and unique medicine they prescribed: "castor oil". A very powerful and highly effective purgative. This practice has been completely forgotten, now less bloody methods can be used. I remind those who read these lines: when the "doctors conducted" were contacted because a child had a fever, they gave a very "wise" answer: "in the meantime, purge him and tomorrow if there are problems I will come to visit him", usually the next day I don't they were called. The increase in body temperature usually leads to the feverish person sweating. Sweating removes a lot of fluids from the body. The stools found in the large intestine also undergo this loss of fluids and consequently tend to become hard so that their elimination becomes problematic. Stagnation of stool in the large intestine increases toxins in the body. Practically the organism absorbs some "substances" that are in the faeces because these have not been eliminated. These substances are certainly not useful considering they had to be eliminated. All this turns into a further aggravation of the situation, because the body must not only react to the flu, but must use part of its resources to eliminate the "toxins" that come from stagnant stools. Our body must thus work on two fronts, diverting precious energies to overcome the flu. It has been found that bowel cleansing (emptying) in most people leads to a decrease in temperature from ½ to 1 ° after about 30 minutes.

The enema is performed using the entero-irrigator, except for small children where the "peretta - squirting" is used depending on how you want to call it. For an enema water is normally used, it can also be done using herbal teas, such as linden or chamomile.

If, in addition to the enema, there is a need to hydrate, a pinch of fine salt is added. Tap water usually contains chlorine, and this is not too good for the intestinal wall. It is therefore advisable to filter the water, or use mineral water (the one in glass bottles). The water temperature must be 35 ° - 36 °, it is measured with the thermometer. The amount of water to use depends on the person, remember that it can be up to 2 liters for the adult.

The effect of the enema is amazing for high fever, headache and diarrhea. The enema lowers the high fever by about one degree, so that the symptoms that accompany it, such as malaise, lightheadedness and uneasiness, are mitigated and sleep recovery is guaranteed.

The enema hydrates the child (indicated in both constipation and diarrhea), reduces the temperature of the viscera (usually about 1 degree higher than the skin), promotes "hepato-renal" drainage at a time when the body has need to concentrate forces against viruses.

Conditions to perform it: warm environment, no drafts, empty stomach.

Technology: Fill the pear with water or herbal tea, taking care that there is no air. The child is lying on his left side with his legs bent, oil or glycerin is applied to the butt and cannula, then gently inserted. You spray the water very gently, try to hold the water for a minute and then let it drain. If the child is small, he puts on a diaper and checks himself when he discharges. In the child many times with the first enema "nothing" happens, because he uses water to hydrate himself, just do a second enema after about ten minutes and the baby is free.

For those who use the internal sprinkler also called "bag" must have the foresight to consider the height where this is placed. The bag must have a height of 10 - 20 cm. The flowing water has no pressure and does not create problems for the colon mucosa.

Never take an enema after eating, in a cold environment and if there are bowel problems.

This cleaning methodology, which has been practiced for thousands of years in many countries, allows the body to deal with the flu more vigorously. Most children try to refuse the enema, but once the immediate benefits are experienced, it is preferred over other forms of therapy.

Never say: “but the little one is already bad let's leave him alone”, “he doesn't like it”, “he has already pooped” and so on. You will see how many "things" come out and how he relaxes and improves his physical state, it is not violence but a serious and necessary help towards him: you would give up doing one of the most important things for his health.

For young children a 50 ml "peretta - squirting" is used, for older children 100 ml, for adults people use the "enteroirrigatore" or bag that holds up to two liters.

Fever and natural cures

To face a fever there are many possibilities, first of all we must remain calm, always calm, only in this way can we find the best answers to the problems that arise from time to time.

heritage: now the knowledge of our great and precious allies is fading. Very few know and collect these precious substances. Incidentally, these oversights are also affecting our family economy. There are various possibilities to take the active ingredients of plants useful for our body: the infusion, the mother tincture, the glycerin macerate, the dry extract and the essential oils. The infusion is within everyone's reach, while for the other extractions you need to have a little knowledge and experience to make them.

We reaffirm the importance of "going to collect herbs", only in this way are we certain that we have herbs that are good for us. Remember the balsamic time and the time of harvest to have an excellent result. In Italy the radiation of aromatic herbs is allowed (they are preserved more). The changes that this practice causes are not known, you must inquire, if you buy them, if they have this problem.

Infusion: For 1 regular cup, pour boiling water over a teaspoon of choice herb. The ceramic cup and with the lid. Leave the infusion covered for 10 minutes. Filter, and serve. Most of the time it can be sweetened with honey. (do not use chestnut honey, otherwise it tastes like soap)

Infusion: linden flowers, good against any feverish illness. This flu treatment stimulates metabolism and sweating thus expelling the disease. It must be drunk as hot as possible, and can cause a rise in body temperature which you shouldn't be afraid of. If the fever is already very high initially, prepare a weaker infusion and drink lukewarm. In the presence of strong cough during the flu they can be mixed with coltsfoot or thymus inflorescences. The infusion of linden flowers is also excellent in the prophylaxis against cooling diseases, especially for children subject to frequent infections.

Normally, children are given half to one cup of infusion three to five times a day. If the infusion, in the presence of very high fevers, must be less strong, simply double the dose of water.

Infusion: elderberry flowers, is the most suitable, after the linden infusion, with which it can be mixed, in case of cold. Preparation and administration: a teaspoon of flowers for a quarter of a boiling liter, filter after fifteen minutes from half to a cup three to five times a day.

Infusion: Willow (Salix Alba) the bark of the 2 or 3 year old branches is used. Always known and used against fevers. An excellent and popular anti-flu herbal tea was prepared, thanks to its active ingredient "glycoside salicin" which the body transforms into salicylic acid. Willow is a pain reliever, lowers the temperature and is anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic. Up to three cups are used per day.

Mother tincture: (TM)
they are alcoholic extracts from fresh plants. They are used in drops after adding them to water.
Inula Helenium - root - 25 drops several times a day.
Verbascum Thapsus - whole plant - 20 drops three times a day
Lavandula Officinalis - flowering top - 30 drops three times a day.

Glycerin macerate: (MG 1 DH)
They are extracted using plant buds
Alnus Glutinosa MG - 1DH
Birch Pubescens MG - 1 DH
Ribes Nigrun MG - 1 DH
up to 50 drops alternating every 1 or 2 hours
children maximum 5 drops alternating every 1 or 2 hours.

Or, an already prepared mixture of gemmo derivatives such as:

Viburnum lantana MG - 1DH
Ribes nigrum MG - 1DH
Carpinus betulus MG - 1DH
Alnus glutinosa MG - 1DH
Betula pubesens MG - 1DH
Up to 10 drops 5 times a day.

Essential oils

They are extracted from very powerful plants. They can be taken both internally and through the skin.
They are very powerful bactericides and some have strong antiviral properties, they are to be used in small quantities.

They have always been used against fever: Thyme, Lemon, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Cinnamon, Melaleuca (Tea Tree Oil), Oregano.

These are the most used essential oils (OE) in case of fever.  Essential oils cannot be used in children up to one year of age, they are too strong for them.

They can be taken both internally and externally: a mixture of essential oil and extra virgin olive oil must always be prepared, which can be a single essential oil or a mixture of these. How to do it: you buy a bottle with a 20 ml dropper, (it is easily found in the pharmacy and are made of dark glass) you put 20 drops of OE of thyme, 20 drops of OE of malaleuca (tea tree oil) 20 drops of OE of oregano and 20 drops of lemon oil, fill the bottle with oil, shake and the mixture is ready.

An adult can, for internal use, take 15 drops even 4 times a day, a child no more than 5 drops 4 times a day.
If you don't like it, put the drops in a little warm water with a little honey and become easier to take.
This is an example of a mixture of essential oils, you can use a single oil or the oils most suitable for the various symptoms. Externally you can massage the baby with these solutions, using a few drops, but it is also good for the adult especially in the navel area. In this blend of oils and extra virgin olive oil, essential oils do not "bother", do not irritate and do not "burn".

Ancient herbal recipe: Holy thistle 25%, Gentian 25%, Centaurea 25%, Tormentilla 25%. Half a pound of the mixture for a liter of water, boil for 10 minutes, turn off and leave to rest for 1 hour and drink three cups a day.

It is impossible for young children to take these products. In these cases it is the mother who takes them and then passes them to the baby with breastfeeding.

Homeopathy has many and very effective remedies. For small children the "granules" are dissolved in a little water and given to drink. The classic remedies are:

The classic remedies are:

Pretty Woman D6: in cases of strong and sudden fever, mainly in the evening, accompanied by a red and hot face and strong perspiration, also indicated when the child is agitated and aggressive and does not want to drink.

aconite D9: in cases of anxiety, absence of sweat and thirst.

Ferrum phosphoricum D6: indicated in pale children, who change color in a feverish state and suffer from cold easily, they are calm because they usually also have a cough and if they fidget this is painful, moreover they suffer from earache.

Eupatorium Perforatum  D6: when the fever is higher in the morning of the evening, and it is accompanied by weakness and the feeling of feeling broken, moreover hypersensitivity to the eyes occurs, especially in the morning and they persistently want fresh drinks.

Gelsenium D6: the child is in a state of obvious lightheadedness, has a great desire to sleep and feels weak, when he accuses limb pains, chills and tremors, when he is not thirsty and the heat bothers him and when the symptoms are more strong in the afternoon. This remedy is especially indicated for the summer.

Preparations containing more than one homeopathic remedy can also be found on the market, for example:

R1 (they are anti-inflammatory - anti-infective drops) contain: Apis Mel D4, Barium Chorat. D6, Belladonna D4, Calcium Jodat. D4, Hepar sul. D12, Kalium bichr. D4, Lachesis D12, Marum Ver. D6, Mercur. subl. corr. D5, Phytolacca D4.

Administration: acute inflammatory and infectious states, with high fever, require a dosage of 10-15 drops in a little water every half hour. From the second day of therapy, reduce the doses by interval of 1-2 hours until complete recovery. In children, the dosage should be reduced to three drops for the very young and 5 drops from 18 months.

R6 (are  flu drops) contain: Aconitum D4, Bryonia D4, Camphora D6, Causticum Hahnem. D6, Baptisia D4, Eupatorium perf. D3, Ferrum phosph. D6, Gelsenium D6, Eucalyptus D3, Sabadilla D6. Administration: in acute flu states it is advisable to administer 10 drops in a little water every 15 minutes for a few hours. When the temperature drops and when sweating begins, bring the dosage to 10-15 drops every 1-2 hours according to the clinical symptoms up to garrison. In children reduce the dosage.

These remedies can be administered together, even with this method: 60 drops of R1 and R6 in a glass of water and a teaspoon is administered every ¼ of an hour. If the baby is asleep, leave him alone.

Hydrotherapy: the use of cold water serves to remove internal heat. The cold recalls the heat, thus the head and the whole body is decongested.
Environment: warm;
Sick on an empty stomach;
Warm feet and hands (or warm up with a hot water bottle or massage);

The clutches or sponges:
at the first feverish rises you can practice up to 6 cold frictions a day with immediate bed rest, well covered, with a possible hot water bottle on your feet.
Quickly strip and rub it with a cotton towel that has been immersed in a basin of cold water with 3-4 spoons of vinegar. The towel must be wrung out, only wet and not dripping with water.

Technology: we pass the body of the feverish person with the damp cloth starting from the right arm then the left, neck, chest from right to left, abdomen in a circular clockwise shape, right leg, left leg, back and right and left leg behind. Taking care to wet and wring the cloth more than once in cold water. Usually, especially if the baby is hypersensitive or reluctant, only the abdomen, thighs, legs and arms are passed. Coat it quickly. The whole thing lasts no more than a minute. Cover it well to make a sweat reaction. Normally, the frictions must be carried out with cold water. Only if the body is cold and there are chills can it be done with hot water, followed later, if possible, by cold water. Repeat every 30-120 minutes for up to 6 frictions a day, avoiding waking the feverish person if he sleeps. This treatment opens the skin pores and increases the reaction of the skin favoring sweating and the effervescence of fever. The cutaneous vasomotor reaction helps protect the brain from excessive congestion and also from febrile seizures. If performed with gentleness and attention, it meets the child's full acceptance over time. This therapy is also indicated for adults.

wraps: calves and forearms. They are bathed in cold water and wrung out 4 handkerchiefs (1 per limb) and the forearms and calves are bandaged. With 4 other handkerchiefs they are covered and the child is put to bed, this compress can be repeated many times, it changes when it becomes hot.

Bandage: it is the best technique, but it must be performed very well, otherwise it is better not to do it so as not to create problems for the feverish person. The bandage is done from the armpits to the knees. Technique: a light cotton fabric of the right size is bathed in cold water. The baby is swaddled well and then wrapped with a thick dry towel and a woolen cloth on top. The sick person goes to bed and after 4 - 5 minutes at the most he must not have any sensation of cold if the cold persists, he takes everything off. You can leave the bandage on for 20 - 30 minutes then take it off.

Pajamas: They take the long pants of a light pajama. Immerse it in cold water, squeeze it and put it on the child. On top of another thicker pajamas and put him to bed. After a while it must no longer feel cold, otherwise it takes off everything. Also this technique for 20-30 minutes.

Total bathroom: this is also a very important hydrotherapy technique, which can be of considerable help. The feverish person is immersed in a tub of water. It is important that the water temperature is 2 degrees lower than the patient. Example fever at 40 ° the water must be at 38 °. By osmosis one degree is removed from the patient and finds himself with a fever of 39 °.

Important: never immerse the patient in cold water can collapse and stay there !!!!

Cold wet cloth on the forehead: it is not a good solution although it can sometimes give relief. This compress brings heat to the head, while it is important to remove it, so as not to damage the brain.

Clay poultice: a mixture of clay and water is prepared (the consistency of yogurt) the prepared clay is spread on a sheet of wrapping paper the size of the abdomen of the feverish person, for a layer of one millimeter / two and put a gauze on top. It is applied cold on the abdomen (in this way when it is removed there is no clay left to wash). Once the poultice is placed, it is wrapped first with cotton and then over wool, everything is blocked with an elastic net or with an elastic band. If after five minutes there is still the feeling of cold where the poultice was applied, remove everything. Otherwise leave an hour or two then you can substitute. This therapy reduces the abdominal temperature and absorbs toxins and inflammation, it also takes the heat away from the head.
Remember to never wake the baby, as sleep is healing.
If he sleeps, the poultice will be left until he wakes up. Instead of using clay, earth can be used, but it must not be contaminated. The same technique is used, but the "earth layer" is 5 millimeters.

Other indications: Lemon:  for those who have a headache, heaviness or feel that their head is bursting, a slice of lemon can be placed on the sole of the foot (in each foot) and bandaged, this technique most of the time relieves the problems mentioned above.

Royal jelly: During a fever, royal jelly provides excellent support thanks to its antiviral and antibactericidal practicalities. Royal jelly should be taken in small quantities sublingually, that is under the tongue and gradually allowing it to be absorbed, in case of flu it was recommended to take royal jelly even three times a day. For those who can't stand the taste, it can be mixed with honey.

Propolis: in case of flu 20 drops are recommended three times a day, remember that someone is allergic to propolis.

Vitamin C: during the flu, vitamin C should never be missing. During a fever it is useful to increase the amount of natural Vitamin C daily by 5-10 times, up to 500 mg per day in each form.

We recommend freshly squeezed or fresh citrus juices. The foods richest in vitamin C are wild rose and acerola. Rosehip can be taken in caps, juices or drops. It can also be found in herbal tea or jam.

Garlic Onion: another interesting custom was to put 1 or 2 onions cut in half and 2 cloves of garlic cut in half in the sick room. The exhalations of the active ingredients of these "lily" are breathed by the feverish and these exhalations bring a great benefit and a valid help to fight the fever.

Juniper: Since ancient times there was the good habit of using "rivers" to purify environments. The juniper berries put to burn purify the air and the sick person has the possibility to breathe uncontaminated air.

Magnesium chloride: this salt is also an excellent aid in the moment of infections, see on the site under the heading "poliomyelitis" many indications. Remember that magnesium chloride must be used far from homeopathy.

Colloidal Silver: always known as a powerful anti bacterial and anti viral.
